Who is Sergio?
Hello! My friends and family call me Surge. I am a Rio Grande Valley native, born and raised!
I grew up in McAllen, TX and graduated from McAllen High School (Go Dogs!). I met my wife Saleena my senior year in high school and we have been together ever since. I guess she must like me!
After high school I attended UT-Pan American (now known as UTRGV) and received my Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. I graduated college during the GREAT RECESSION of 2008! What a time to go into the financial services business. I wasn't discouraged because I knew I wanted to help people plan for their future regardless of what was going on in the economy at the time.
I am now what they call in my business a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.
Is this designation important? I may be biased but it is probably the most important designation a financial planner can attain. Most people think all financial planners are "certified," but this isn't true. Just about anyone can use the title "financial planner." Only those who have fulfilled CFP Board's rigorous requirements can call themselves a CFP® professional. If you want to know what those rigorous requirements are check out this website: http://www.letsmakeaplan.org.
So why did I choose to become a CFP®?
I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley where 80%-90% of the population is Mexican-American, and in my family/culture we usually don't have any experience with the financial world and planning for the future.
Luckily, my area is flooded with people known as "Winter Texans" who travel south from their home states to the Rio Grande Valley in order to get away from the cold during the winter months. At a ripe age of about 10 or 12 I asked one of these "Winter Texans" how he was able to afford to travel in luxury in his RV and hang out at South Padre Island all day without a worry in the world. The gentlemen looked me straight in the eye and said to me, "Young man, when I got my first job I started investing!" I did not know what this man meant by investing but I never forgot that day at South Padre Island. When I got to college I chose to take a class called "Investment Principles" and the rest is history!
So welcome to my website, feel free to look around! You will find useful calculators and information that may help you plan for your future. If you want to visit with me for a complimentary consultation give my office a call or shoot me an email.
